  • About Dr. Whitten

    C. Weston Whitten, MD, is a pain specialist at Nebraska Pain Institute in Lincoln, Nebraska. He is Double-Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. Dr. Whitten was raised on a farm near Lexington, Nebraska and graduated from Overton Public School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with an emphasis in Molecular Biology in 3 years from the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Dr. Whitten received many distinctions including graduating Summa Cum Laude and graduating from the Honor’s Program. Dr. Whitten then received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

    Dr. Whitten completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Upon completion, he furthered his training in Pain Medicine at the premier pain medicine fellowship in the country, Carolina’s Pain Institute-Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

    While at Carolina’s Pain Institute, Dr. Whitten trained under several of the most prominent physicians in pain medicine. This group of doctors literally “wrote the book” on pain medicine and gave Dr. Whitten a unique insight into the treatment of pain. Throughout his training, Dr. Whitten participated in many novel pain treatment modalities, including numerous research studies that are helping to expand treatment modalities worldwide.

    Dr. Whitten is well versed in the most cutting-edge pain treatment therapies. He provides personalized multimodal treatments, including medication management, interventional procedures, and alternative therapies. Dr. Whitten has expertise in spinal cord stimulation, non-opioid management, sports-related chronic pain, and vertebral augmentation.

    Dr. Whitten brings country values to his medical practice. His work ethic was forged through loading semi-trailers with hay bales and checking cattle at 2:00 AM. He values honesty and integrity and will work hard to earn your trust and to “get you back to the good life.”

    In his free time, Dr. Whitten enjoys spending quality time with his wife, two sons, and daughter. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, farming, and physical fitness.

  • Douglas Spurgeon, MD is a Pain Specialist at the Nebraska Pain Institute in Lincoln, NE. He also has outreach clinics in Nebraska City and York. Dr. Spurgeon is Double-Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. He was raised in Gretna, Nebraska and graduated from Gretna High School, then attended Nebraska Wesleyan University where he played basketball and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology with a minor in English. Dr. Spurgeon graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he received his Doctorate of Medicine.

    Dr. Spurgeon has an extensive training background including 3 years of General Surgery residency followed by another three years of Anesthesiology residency. He joined Associated Anesthesiologists, PC following residency. He worked as an anesthesiologist for 17 years where he specialized in regional anesthesia, and acute chronic pain management. He is very adept at ultrasound guided blocks and brings a unique perspective to treating chronic painful conditions.

    Dr. Spurgeon travelled the country to further his education in chronic pain management, learning from some of the best in the field. He is dedicated to treating chronic pain full time and is a strong believer in the team approach to patient care. He is a true patient advocate and encourages the patient to take an active role in his or her care. In his spare time, Dr. Spurgeon enjoys spending time with his family including his wife and 2 young children. He also enjoys golfing and personal fitness.
